About the Laboratory

Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology (LAPE) is specialized research body of the university founded in September 2002 at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia as part of the Department of Botany. Since 2014 LAPE is a separate department of Faculty of Science.

Research activity of laboratory members is targeted at the area of bioarchaeology and palaeoecology, namely archaeobotany, archaeozoology, but also other specializations dealing with interaction between humans and environment in history. Bachelor, magister and doctor theses namely in botany, zoology and environmental archaeology are developed within the laboratory. In the case of environmental archaeology, laboratory closely collaborates with the Institute of Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy. LAPE comprises research in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. LAPE also offers services for other research bodies. Besides consultancy concerning natural sciences in archaeology LAPE provides analytical work in several areas of bioarchaeology. LAPE co-edits the international journal Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica, Natural Sciences in Archaeology (IANSA).

Database program ArboDatMulti

Database program ArboDatMulti (http://www.arup.cas.cz/czad/arbodat.php?l=en) serves for storing and evaluating of archeobotanical data. The database program is based on MS Access. It enables interconnecting of several data-tables comprising data of archeobotanical analyses, details of archaeological excavations as well as data about ecological and other traits of plant taxa.

The benefit of ArboDatMulti is the possibility to store data from many archaeobotanical analyses in only one MS Access file, which enables easy searching for data according to various criteria. Other benefit is the possibility to store data in a unified form (for example thanks to a uniform coding system of plant taxa as well as other indexes). The Archaeobotanical database of the Czech Republic (CZAD) administered by the Institute of Archaeology AS CR in Prague (http://www.arup.cas.cz/czad/index.php?l=en) was also based on ArboDatMulti.

For those users, who are not familiar with MS Access, the ArboDatMulti program offers a user friendly interface of interactive forms. On the other hand, the program offers unlimited possibilities for more advanced users, since the data tables in the program are freely accessible.

The handbook for users of ArboDatMulti is here (EN_Manual.pdf).
