Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology (LAPE) is specialized research body of the university founded in September 2002 at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia as part of the Department of Botany. Since 2014 LAPE is a separate department of Faculty of Science.

Research activity of laboratory members is targeted at the area of bioarchaeology and palaeoecology, namely archaeobotany, archaeozoology, but also other specializations dealing with interaction between humans and environment in history. Bachelor, magister and doctor theses namely in botany, zoology and environmental archaeology are developed within the laboratory. In the case of environmental archaeology, laboratory closely collaborates with the Institute of Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy. LAPE comprises research in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. LAPE also offers services for other research bodies. Besides consultancy concerning natural sciences in archaeology LAPE provides analytical work in several areas of bioarchaeology. LAPE co-edits the international journal Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica, Natural Sciences in Archaeology (IANSA).

Mgr. Lenka Suková 

Mgr. Lenka Suková (born in 1977 in Chomutov) graduated in Egyptology and Indian Studies (specialisation in Hindi) at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. Since 2008, she has been studying Egyptology in doctoral study programme at the same Faculty, with a dissertation project dedicated to the rock art of Northeast Africa. Between 2004 and 2006, she worked in the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures as the curator of the collection of the Department of Prehistory and Ancient History of Near East and North Africa. Since 2007, she has been working as a researcher in the Czech Institute of Egyptology (Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague) where she has been specialising in the cultural and social developments in Northeast Africa during the Early and Middle Holocene and processing and evaluating the research by the Czechoslovak Institute of Egyptology in Lower Nubia between 1961 and 1965. She has experience with fieldwork in Egypt and Libya; since 2009 she has been directing the interdisciplinary research in the area of the Sixth Nile Cataract and the Sabaloka Mountains (the Sabaloka Research Project) and taking part in exploration of the second archaeological concession of the Czech Institute of Egyptology in Sudan – the site of Usli (Northern Province).
